History, Aims and Objectives

About Us :-

The National Institute of Ayurveda was established on 7 th February 1976 as an Autonomous Body and Registered Society. NIA is fully funded and controlled by the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India and is a premier Institute under the Ministry in the field of Ayurvedic Education, Training, Research and Treatment, the mandates given to it. The Controlling Body is the Executive Council Chaired by the Vice-Chancelor. There is a Finance Committee Chaired by Vice-Chancellor. A number of Committees also exist for Academic, Research, Patient Care, Administrative etc. like Scientific Advisory Committee, Institutional Ethics Committee, Research Review Board etc. The Budget Allocation for 2025-26 is Rs.25000 Lakhs. NIA is a Deemed to be University Under de-novo Category and an NAAC 'A' Grade Accredited Institute. NIA is a Member of the Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities. NIA has also applied for Membership in International Association of Universities.

The Institute imparts Diploma (30 Seats), Graduate(125 Seats), Post-Graduate (130 Seats in 14 Specialties) and Post-Doctoral(28 Seats in 14 Specialties) Programs apart from a one year Panchakarma Technician Course(30 Seats) and more than a dozen Short Term Courses on various Topics. It has also launched 6 Two-Year Post-Graduate Programs of M.Sc. in new 6 Departments (Inter-Disciplinary). Admission, Academic and Examination matters of all the Programs are henceforth done by the Institute on its own, being Deemed University. All the Teaching Departments are well equipped with modern teaching aids, air-conditioned Class Rooms, Departments, Museum, Laboratories etc. Apart from Reservations of Seats for SC, ST, OBC, seats are also reserved for foreign countries in UG, PG and Ph.D. Programs. Seats are reserved for Foreign Nationals in the UG, PG and Ph.D. Programs. Presently 50 Foreign Nationals, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bolivia, Brazil, Ghana, Iran, Malaysia, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua Russia, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Syria Thailand, Tanzania and Zambia are pursuing Graduate, Post-Graduate and Post-Doctoral Programs. 2 International and 35 Domestic MOUs have been signed with Government, Non-Government and Private manufacturing organisations for undertaking various research, training, treatment, exchange of faculty etc.

The Institute 280 Bedded Hospital is an NABH Accredited Hospital with another 20 Bedded Hospital. The Hospital has OPD Services, Patient Investigation Services(Laboratory on PPP Model), Cottage Wards, Deluxe Wards separate Hospital for SC and ST Population (for which separate funds are available for organising Free Medical Camps, Medicines, etc.). The Bed Occupancy is more than 80% and the OPD Footfall is more than 4 Lakhs per year. More than 300 types of medicines worth more than Rs. 1200 Lakhs are manufactured in the GMP Certified Pharmacy annually for free dispensing to patients and research. Almost all medicines prescribed to OPD and IPD Patients are manufactured in the Pharmacy. A number of Camps are organised every year for various diseases, awareness programs etc.

The Institute has received Accreditations like NABL, FSSAI for Hospital Kitchen, ISO for Hospital Laboratory etc. It has applied for NIRF and also 20 applications filed for Patents. The Institute has been awarded Guiness Book of World Records along with more a dozen national and international awards connected with it. NIA has been alloted with half a dozen All India Programs by the Ministry of AYUSH like Intermediary Pharmaco-vigilance, Nodel Agency for AYURTECH., Regional Raw Drug Repository Western Region, Technical Working Group on AYUSH & RNTCP. The Ministry has also declared NIA as the Nodal Agency for Ayurveda Manuscriptology.

An Extension Centre named “National Institute of Ayurveda” has come up at Panchkula (Haryana). It is a Rs. 295 Crore Project for which 20 Acres of land has been provided free of cost. Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi laid the Foundation Stone for the Institute on 12-2-2019. The Institute is functional with Graduate Program(100 Seats) and Hospital with OPD, IPD, Panchakarma Unit, Laboratory, Regular and Contractual Teaching and Non-Teaching, Supporting Staff of nearly 125.

A land parcel of 1.37 Acres was acquired through Department of Heavy Industry, GOI in a prime location in the City which is being developed for extending various activities. The Institute has huge infrastructure in the form of Land, Buildings, Space, Equipments and Machineries, Staff etc. The Campus is spread over 12 Acres of land with a number of multi-storey buildings of 2 to 6 Floors with a built-up area of 58,000 Sq. Meters for Academic, Training, Hospital, Pharmacy, Museums, Guest Houses etc. and Hostels for boys and girls with 458 capacity. 59 Quarters and Guest Houses are housed away from the Campus. More buildings for Expansion of Hospital, Panchakarma, Pharmacy, Animal House, Guest Houses, etc. have been constructed in the recent past in the Campus. A Herbal Garden of 20 Acres of land is being developed for cultivation of different types of herbs etc. for training and pharmaceutical uses. There are ample facilities for Sports, Games, and Gymnasium etc. for students with fully equipped indoor and outdoor activities. There is a fully air-conditioned and well equipped Auditorium with 550 seats. The entire Campus has been repaired, renovated and strengthened to project it as an international level institute. NIA Jaipur + NIA Panchkula has a sanctioned strength of 392 Regular Posts, both Teaching and Non-Teaching, along with more than 550 positions for outsourcing. Ninety per cent of them are filled. More infrastructures like Buildings, Space, Machineries, Equipments, Staff etc. are added every year to suit to an institute of national importance.
